Barrel sauna: a shape that works, not one that poses
Curved walls remove dead corners, shrink the air volume you have to heat, and let heat circulate along the curve. Faster to temperature, cheaper to run.
Why a barrel
A box room has corners where hot air stops moving. A barrel has none. Heat circulates along the curve, the volume you must heat is smaller for the same number of seats, and the result is a sauna that's ready sooner on a smaller heater. It happens to be beautiful too — but that's a bonus, not the reason.
Surviving Bandung weather
Outdoors the enemy isn't heat, it's rain and wet-dry cycling. We use Nordic spruce finished with shou sugi ban — timber charred under control so the carbon layer repels water, fungus and insects without chemicals. Capped roof, stainless bands, and a foundation that lifts the floor off the ground.
Placement
Ideally 3–5 steps from the cold point and the rest zone. Bandung's 18–20°C evening air makes cooling down outdoors genuinely pleasant — an advantage Jakarta simply doesn't have. See the wellness area guide for laying out the loop.

Frequently asked questions
Will a barrel sauna survive Bandung's rain?
With a shou sugi ban finish, capped roof and raised foundation, yes. What kills outdoor saunas isn't rain — it's water that can't dry out.
Can it be wood-fired instead of electric?
Yes, and many garden saunas go that way — no dependence on PLN capacity at all. It needs a flue and clearance from combustibles.
How fast does it heat?
Usually faster than a box sauna of the same capacity, around 30–40 minutes, because there's less air volume.
Do I need a building permit?
For a detached structure on private land, usually not — but it depends on local rules and the estate. We check during the survey.
